Ooma

Ooma Office is a business phone system, video and messaging solution that’s easy to set up, use and expand as your business grows. Ooma Office comes with 100-plus features, such as a virtual receptionist (aka auto attendant), ring groups, virtual faxing, multi-site access and email audio attachments of voicemail. You don’t need a long-term contract to sign up for Ooma Office.

Featured plan—The most popular plan is Ooma Office Pro, which is $24.95 per user per month excluding applicable taxes and fees, and includes videoconferencing for up to 25 participants and simultaneous screen sharing, call recording, enhanced call blocking, analytics and integration with Google and Office 365. It works with conventional analog phones, IP phones and desktop and mobile apps.

Good to know—Call queuing, Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics 365 integration and hot desking features require an upgrade to the Ooma Pro Plus plan, which is $29.95 per user per month excluding applicable taxes and fees.

8×8

8×8 offers business phone systems with voice, video and chat that integrate business apps and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools. This makes it easy for teams to work and collaborate in their preferred ways, from anywhere and on any device.

Featured plan—8×8’s eXperience X2 plan is $28 per user per month and includes 24 business communications features, like auto attendant, call queues, and video and audio conferencing for up to 500 participants. You can mix and match plans. The X2 plan comes with unlimited voice calling to 14 countries, messaging, Microsoft Teams integration, hot desking, voicemail transcription, call analytics, unified mobile, desktop and web apps, and virtual faxing.

Good to know—If you want more advanced features, such as barge, monitor and whisper capabilities or unlimited voice in 48 countries, you’ll need to upgrade to the X4 plan, which is $57 per user per month.

AT&T

AT&T Office@Hand integrates voice, audio and videoconferencing, faxing, and text messaging across desktop and mobile phones, computers and tablets. They offer four business communications solution plans.

Featured plan—The AT&T Office@Hand Standard plan is $27 per user per month for a month-to-month term and is based on a 100-seat minimum. It includes 13 business features, including call routing, multi-level Interactive Voice Response (IVR), virtually unlimited local and long-distance voice, a toll-free number with 1,000 toll-free minutes per user per month, internet faxes, videoconferencing for up to 100 participants, and Google and Microsoft Office 365 integrations.

Good to know—Automatic call recording, caller ID from CNAM and Salesforce Integration require an upgrade to the Premium plan, which is $37.98 per user per month.

Comcast

Comcast doesn’t offer phone service alone, but they have two options that bundle internet and business phone plans.  Voice Mobility allows you to include up to 24 mobility lines with any business internet plan and with Business VoiceEdge you can add 5,000+ seats and get more advanced phone features, like readable voicemail and audio-conferencing for up to 100 participants.

Featured plan— Comcast’s Business Internet Essential 50 Mbps + 1 Phone Line is a bundled business internet and phone plan; monthly prices vary by location from $64.99 to $120. The cost to add an additional phone line varies between $24.95 and $49.95. This is a Voice Mobility line so you can access your business phone features even when you’re not in the office. It includes unlimited nationwide calling and Comcast Business Security EdgeTM to help protect connected devices against online threats. It includes calling features like caller ID and history, advanced call hold and transfer, call park/call pickup/auto-rerouting and distinctive ring, call waiting and a hunt group.

Good to know—Service isn’t offered in all areas, so check availability online with your business address. A two-year agreement is required.

Google Voice

Google Voice is part of the Google Workspace family, so it has a look and usability that is similar to other Google products.  They offer three business phone plans.    

Featured planGoogle Voice states that its Standard plan, at $20 per user per month, is their best value. Features include mobile and web apps, 24/7 support, voicemail transcription, Google Calendar and Google Meet integration, multi-level auto attendant, ring groups and ad-hoc call recording.

Google Voice uses Google AI to block spam calls. You also get unlimited text messaging within the U.S.

Good to know—Google Voice is available in 14 countries including the U.S., except for Alaska, Hawaii, the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Island, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Because you are unable to make emergency calls with Google Voice, Google advises that you use your device’s phone app to make those calls.

GoTo Connect

GoTo Connect is an easy-to-use system for voice, video meetings and chat. You can call from anywhere, on any device with desktop, web and mobile apps. They offer two business phone plans.

Featured plan— The Standard plan, at $32 per user per month, is the most popular with unlimited auto attendants, call queues and ring plans; drag-and-drop interface to set up call flows, and multi-site compatibility.

There is no limit to meeting duration time that can accommodate up to 150 participants although only 50 can be on webcams at the same time. You get free calling in more than 50 countries.

Good to know—Texting is only available in the U.S. and Canada and each seat gets an allowance of 80 credits per month.

magicJack

magicJack for Business has one phone service that it promotes as a simple and affordable phone service tailored for business needs. So simple that magicJack says users can have their phone system up and running in 10 minutes.

Featured planmagicJack for Business is $15.99 per line per month and includes unlimited U.S. and Canada calling, caller ID, music on hold, enhanced call forwarding, voicemail, online call logs, mobile and desktop apps, audio conference calling, but no videoconferencing.

magicJack doesn’t require a contract for service.

Good to know—Add-ons can add up quickly because magicJack charges $10 per month for an auto attendant, $5 per month for virtual faxing and $5 per month for a toll-free number.

Nextiva

Nextiva has three business communication plans that offer phone, video and collaboration features. Every plan starts with unlimited voice and video calling and internet faxing and voicemail.

Featured plan—Nextiva’s most popular business plan is Enterprise, which is a phone, video and collaboration solution for small-to-medium teams with more than 75 business features. Monthly rates vary depending on the number of lines on your account. For example, the monthly rate for a single user is $45.95, but if you have 100 or more users it would drop to $39.95 per user. It integrates with a wide range of CRM platforms and customer-facing apps, such as Google and Outlook contacts and calendars, Salesforce, HubSpot, Zendesk, NetSuite, Lotus Notes, Bullhorn and more. A toll-free number is included with up to 12,500 minutes of calling. Each user can send up to 2,000 text messages.

Good to know—Video calls are limited to 45 minutes.

RingCentral

RingCentral offers three business communications plans for calls, meetings and messaging. Although in a beta phase, each plan includes end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for calls, video and messaging. E2EE protects against eavesdropping because only participants can decrypt the communications.   

Featured plan—RingCentral’s most popular business communications plan is Advanced, at $35 per user per month. It offers more than 50 business features, such as multi-level auto attendant and IVR, caller ID, video meetings, whisper/barge call monitoring, hot desking, mobile apps, cost center management and several analytical capabilities.

The Advanced plan integrates with many applications, including Microsoft Teams, Office 365, Google, Slack, numerous CRM products like Salesforce and Zendesk, as well as industry-specific platforms such as Canvas and Smarsh. New customers can test Advanced with a free 14-day trial for up to 20 phone lines.

Good to know—If you want unlimited storage for files, messaging and call recording, you’ll need the Ultra plan, which is $45 per user per month. Keep in mind, that video calls are exempt from unlimited storage.

Vonage

Vonage has three unified communications plans, which include mobile and desktop apps to use your business phone on the go. Calls and SMS are unlimited, as long as usage is reasonable and acceptable. And all plans include the Vonage App Center that lets users to integrate with more than 20 third-party productivity tools.

Featured plan—Vonage’s most popular unified communications plan is Premium, which is $29.99 per line per month. Premium offers unlimited meetings for up to 100 participants and a multi-level auto attendant. It also can integrate with 12 CRM platforms, such as Bullhorn, Zendesk, Microsoft Dynamics and Zoho.

Good to know—A 1-year minimum contract is required. Although you can cancel anytime, be aware of an Early Termination Fee that can equal the total price of your service contract.

Need help picking a winner?

One big benefit we didn’t mention is that all Voice over IP phone service providers, not just the best, will let you keep your existing business phone number. But you can always pick a new number if you want.

Many of the plans identified in this post offer discounts if you pay annually rather than monthly.
